In
The New Year by Alice Margetson (aged 9)
In the New Year
I want to see Sophie
In the New Year,
I'd like to go on holiday
To Lanzarote and France.
Lanzarote for the winter and France for the summer.
For my next birthday,
I'd like to go to the theatre or the cinema
with Tia or Sophie and my family.
In the New Year
I'd like to have lots of adventures
And I'd like to do lots of interesting projects.
In the New Year
In the New Year
What do you want in the New Year?
2003
by Adam Page (aged 9)
I hope that
it will snow in January,
I hope that we have fun in America
I don't want any more terrorists attacks,
I hope that everything in the world is free
I hope I get lots of presents for when I'm ten,
I hope that there will be no such thing as security
I wish that there were flying cars!
My
Dreams by Alex Williamson (aged
11)
I look forward
to:
Going to fancy parties,
Getting drunk on lemonade,
Staying up late,
And finding my fate,
For the New Year!
Riding my
bike,
And fishing for pike,
I hope to get a pet,
But keep out of debt,
In the New Year!
I
Wish Upon a New Year Star by Tanuvi
Ethunandan
I gazed through
my bedroom window at the twinkling, wishing star
Up in the velvet night sky stretching so far
I reached out to the wishing star and shouted,
Please may you make all my new year wishes come true in a big way -
I wish that there are more smiles instead of tears, please
I wish that there is more food instead of famine, please
I wish that there is peace on earth instead of war, please
I wish that there is honesty instead of crime, please
I wish that there is gentleness instead of violence, please
I wish that there are safe inventions and discoveries
instead of dangerous creations, please
I wish that there is sunshine and rain
instead of floods and droughts, please
I wish that there is togetherness and friendship
instead of selfishness and hate, please
I wish that there is love
instead of cruelty to children and animals, please
I wish that there is more giving, sharing and caring
instead of thoughtlessness, please
I wish that there is happiness and good luck
instead of sadness and bad luck, please
Then all of a sudden, I heard MOO MOO
Oh dear! it was my good old Moo Coo alarm clock
Who woke me up with a startle on New Year's Day
Never mind, if it was all a dream anyway
Maybe they will all come true one day in 2003!!!!
Will?
by Madeleine Smith (aged 8)
Will Darcey
Bussell be a footballer?
Will David Beckham do ballet?
Will it be my birthday every single day?
Will paintings
have spiders legs?
Will a man eat cheese on the moon?
Will someone visit the sun in a hot air balloon?
Will Damien
Hirst sing on stage?
Will monkeys take over the world?
Will rulers not be straight but really, really curled?
Will your
teacher become a princess?
Will a frog count to twenty-two?
Will an alien get angry and lock me in a zoo?
The
New Beginning by Zainab Zaheen
Is this how
the New Year is going to be?
Now we live in a world
where we don't know when will disaster strikes us.
With new technology
more disastrous weapons of mass destruction are made.
With advancing armies preparing for war.
I wish the world leaders would make Peace with each other.
And hope they use that money to feed the poor
and the places where there is famine.
I wish that all the troubles and pains of the people would go away.
The people who are homeless would have decent homes to live in.
I hope all the people would have their rights and dignity back.
Runners
Up
No prizes I'm afraid but well done for these
excellent poems
The
New Year by Joshua Bowen (aged 10)
The new year
is coming,
The birds are humming,
Snow is falling,
My mum is calling,
Hear comes the new year,
What shall I wear?
2003
by Jessica B (aged 8)
I would like
a bicycle,
A flying one if I may,
I'd go and pack my bags,
And go winging far away.
I want my
mum to marry,
Yes marry all over again,
I might have a brother or sister,
But they might be a bit of a pain!
Colors
by Jean Huang
Yellow streamers fall from the sky
Red confetti goes sailing by
Purple rain and orange snow
Flung from the air - down they go!
Brighter colors I've never seen
More joyous I've never been.
I want to dance and sing and prance
and make all children in the world hold hands
to laugh and cry and make amends.
For today is a special day
when all troubles are washed away
to celebrate together and let out a cheer
to welcome in the New Year
Dreams
For the New Year by Summaiya Zaheen
(Age 9)
It's a happy new year, I am so glad.
With thrilling voices and happy noises.
Church bells ringing through the town.
Children singing - it's a happy new year.
Birds chirping happy new year.
I hope this happiness will last forever.
I hope the year won't be like any other common year.
People fighting each other.
Children crying in fear to see their loved ones disappear.
I fear the elders understand the beauty of our earth and do something
to protect and care for the plants and animals.
Which disappear each year.
I hope the world leaders make peace with each other.
I wish my sweet dreams will last forever.
The
Best of the Rest
The
New Year by Hannah Lewis (aged 10)
I
hope you can stop the wars
Because you are going to blow off our doors!
Don't drop your litter on the floor,
there is no point what is the cause!
So please keep to our laws
I wish no one was sad,
Because they are always bad,
It makes everyone mad,
especially my dad!
I
wrote this poem because it's short and snappy,
I wish everyone happy
I hope you enjoyed this poem like me,
This is what I want to happen in 2003.
New
Year by Dipti Krishnan
life may seem hectic,
peace may seem a illusion,
dreams may seem far away,
hope may give a new way,
on this memorable new year's day
Hopes for 2003 by Abigail Hughes (aged 10)

New Year is Coming by Jamie Adams (aged 11)
The
New Year is coming,

does the new year bring?

does
it bring shame?
does it bring game?
does
it bring glory?
does it bring a different story?
does
it bring pain?
does it bring gain?
does
it bring a new king?
what does the new year bring?
What
I Want For My New Year by Jack Margetson (aged 7)
I want it to snow every day
I'd like to play
In the snow
To make pretty patterns like a bow
I want it to be sunny
And see lots of bunnies
I don't want rain
'Cause it's a pain
I don't want ice
'Cause it's not that nice
That's what I want for my New Year.
Check
out these three great new books

Taking
My Human For a Walk
Poems by pets - collected by Roger Stevens (including
poems by Judy Dog) (Macmillan Children's Books)
A
very funny anthology of poems written by pets. From kittens to
gerbils, puppies to budgies, they all have a very important tale to
tell. Hear it from 'the horse's mouth' - from Cat Myths by Paul Cookson
-
I'm not from Cheshire and I never grin
I've not got any cream
I don't like bags and I'm not a burglar.
Tin roofs annoy me
I've never had anybody's tongue...

Wallpapering
the Cat
Jan Dean (Macmillan
Children's Books)
Jan
Dean's fantastic first collection for Macmillan includes sparkling poems
on all sorts of subjects. There are poems on families, aliens, school,
the bog people and,
of course, cats and wallpaper - all written in her clever, witty style.
From A Mother's Confession (Or: What you have always suspected...)
As soon as you are asleep in bed
I unlock the secret cupboard
Where I keep all the chocolate
And I eat it
and eat it
and eat it.
I don't share it with anybody
And I don't give half a hoot about my teeth.

My
Stepdad is an Alien
Poems chosen by David Harmer
(Macmillan
Children's Books)
A
very funny anthology of poems about what parents get up to when you're
not looking. Do they have secret lives and, if so, what exactly do they
do?
From My Step-dad is an Alien by Roger Stevens
I'd suspected for some time.
I finally got up the courage to talk to him about it.
I think you're an alien, I told him.
Nonsense, he said.
Why do you think that?
Well, you've got one green eye and one blue one.
That doesn't make me an alien, he replied.
You can make the toaster work without turning it on
That's just a trick, he smiled..
