The WINNERS

Space by Louise Barritt (aged 8)

Swirling black holes and shooting stars
Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Mars
Satellite signals beamed all around
Ending up back here on the ground

Thousands of miles away from us
You cannot get there by catching a bus!
A rocket you'll need to go that far
But it'll cost a little bit more than a car

Asteroid belts and the Milky Way
Zero gravity so you'll float away
Astronauts, comets and UFO's
Space is a place we'd all like to go.

Black Fear by Adam Gordon (aged 10)

The sun explodes,
A black hole forms,
Earth starts spinning,
Out of control.

People panicking,
Running away,
Nearby planets
Racing past,
The black hole,
Speeding closer

Heart beats quickening,
On the edge of space,
Earth getting stretched,
Into the black hole,
Like a giant twister,
Pressure's building,
And silence...

Space by Jasmine Brown (aged 10)

Night wonders
I drift through the midnight sky,
The Milky Way is shimmering.
Stars glittering softly all around,
And then I fall . . .
fall . . .
fall...

"Honey! Wake up! You fell out of bed."

(Please send us your address, Jasmine)

Journey by Zoe Southgate

Lift Off
1...Fasten my seatbelt
2...Check the oxygen tank
3...Check the oil tank
4...Make sure the engines ok
5....Start the engine

Blast off....
But did I hear a -
'Wake up, come on up'
I got out of my bed
So I had to wait for the next journey....if I survive!

What's a UFO? by Rhea Kuruvilla (aged 11)

It might be a Unique French Omelette,
Or an Upside-Down Fat Ooze,
Unliked Fit Olympic?
Uncanny Free Oatmeal?
It even could be an Upgraded Foul Oil,
Or a Uncurious Foolish Offspring?
Or Unfried Filthy Olives?
Or Unhappy Furry Octagons?
A chance of an Unapproachable Foggy October,
Maybe an Ugly Fuzzy Oddball,
Or an Underarm Friendly Obsession?
I think it's an Unlucky Frequent Outrage,
Or I think --- Unscrambled Ferocious Onomatopoeia!

My Journey Through Space by Jessica Olivar (aged 11)

Flying through space
With amazement on my face
Bouncing past Mars
I see the stars!

Landing on Earth's moon
With a crunch
I get out my bag
And have my lunch!

No gravity force
I have so much fun
Floating like a balloon
And out comes the sun!

One more place to visit
Saturn I should think
So beautiful to look at
I can't even blink!

My journey is over
No aliens to be seen
Back to Earth
Where I land on sweet green!

Houston, We Have a Problem by Violet Macdonald (aged 12)

The gas is getting low.
Houston, we have a problem.
The exhaust pipe just fell off.
Houston, we have a problem.
The booster rockets have exploded.
Houston, we have a problem.
The oxygen supply's near empty.
Houston, we have a problem.
The back window's smashed.
Houston, we have a problem.
The tail fins have just snapped.
Houston, we have a problem.
Engine failing;

Ever get that feeling Houston's not listening?

Please send us your address, Violet

Lonely Galaxies Column by Jessica

Bold, black, darkened sky
Wishes to find a universe
To share its stars with.

Home No More by Seanna Cottle

I cry a little
As I realize
I can't turn back
I can't return
To home again
The moon passes
And the sun rolls by
There is no turning back
There is no lie
I will not see my family again
And I will not see green earth
My beautiful planet
Will be my home no more
I live among the stars now
They move on for miles and miles
I try to call home
I scream as loud as I can
Telling everyone I love them
I will be in this metal prison
For the rest of my life
My family will forget me
My hopes are miles back
I cannot try to love
For the love I lost
I am all alone
Among my many books and sights
Nothing seems to fit
Nothing makes sense
Why did I choose this?
Why did I want to be here?
I don't belong at home
And I don't belong here either
I have no home
I have no life
I am the first to go to our new planet
And I may not survive
Suffocated by gasses
Or fried to a crisp
All I know is
I may never return

Orion and his Dogs by Margaret Sarsfield

Westward, over
opaque valleys,
over
and
under
intangible fences:
racing for their dinner.

Chasing the most
elusive prey;
he is always just below
his enemy when he should be
just ahead.

If the spear
is not soon thrown
the hunter's belt
may fall.
His meals are
few and far between.

Ah, but good star of dogs,
Sirius, shine and lead
your pack, though it may be
but a single dog.
But he can grow,
growling into the frustrated night,
in a millennia he can grow.

Night falls
on our porches and
on our pillows,
Orion calls his dogs,
Lepus will fly tonight.

Space by Daisy Siddall

Space is dark and filled with stars,
Planets spinning round and round,
Aliens in their spaceships flying all over the place,
Counting all the planets. Do you know how many there are?
Every planet is different.

Journey by Olivia Race (aged 11)

As I flew through space…
Stars almost blinded me,
Aliens waved as we passed,
And planets flew at us from all directions,
My journey through space was miraculous!

An Alien Mother's Day by Stacy Ridyard (aged 13)

Over one million googolplexes away,
An alien was celebrating Mother's Day.

He had collected all the things he should need,
A card, a spelton and even a volxenslead.

But that wasn't enough for our alien friend,
So he got in his spaceship and went round the bend.

He didn't stop, 'til he reached the nevelsplar,
Which he put in his bag, then zoomed off with the star.

So when he got back, he left the star on display,
To give his mum a very special Mother's Day

Space by S.Anuradha (aged 8)

In space there are many unknown things
& that's the case.
Maybe there the sun is a moon.
The day is noon?
Do aliens dream?
Are there any aliens?
Is there a single stream in the space?
In space there are many unknown things
& that's the case.

Perfect World by Jessica Roe (aged 10)

I'm in my rocket,
Searching for a new world,
Flying into obscurity,
Comforted by the stars,
Alone.

My journey is tiresome,
No link with Earth,
Time and planets pass me by,
I feel dejected,
Alone.

I blunder across paradise,
Plunge down nervously,
Into the fantastic aura,
A shimmer of glee creeping over me,
Alone.

After years of search,
A new garden of Eden,
A perfect world for mankind,
Everything is excellent,
I'm not alone.

The Sun by Shaun Hunt

A roaring red hot ball,
Going red and orange
Flames flashing like lava,
In the dark deep space,
It is roaring red and hot,
Like in a cooking pot.

Floating Darkness by Destiny

Floating through the galaxy
wondering if the darkness around me is reality or not
I swerve by the moon
and for just a second the possibility of the man in the moon waving at me becomes truth
I spot a hole of emptiness in the distance knowingly it has power to destroy me
I throw myself into a rampage past it trying not to be caught by its mystical powers
I end up drifting near what seems like a world of shooting stars
I wish for all my family's hopes and dreams to be fulfilled
I spy a wonderous planet off in the unknown
Out of curiosity I bring myself to go near it
I ready myself to leave my ship
I skate on the planet's rings of ice
I fall down and with my eyes closed I laugh giddily
But when I open my eyes and look around
I'm back in my room lying on the ground

In My Dreams by Emily Burton (aged 10)

I don't know why I want to be an astronaut,
Floating in the sky,
I know it can be dangerous,
But I still want to fly

Higher than an eagle,
Higher than a plane,
Higher than the wind can reach,
Even higher than the rain.

Hovering in my rocket,
Staring at the stars,
Looking for a planet,
Such as Jupiter or Mars

Landing on the moon,
Bouncing, having fun,
Then leaping in my rocket,
Streaking past the sun

In my dreams,
Flying high,
Some day I know I'll touch the sky.

Stolen Beauty by Annie Ratcliffe (aged 10)

Earth quickly fading,
Planets streaking by,
Giant balls of lumpy cheese,
Trailing long tailed meteors.

Carpets of pinkish dust,
Stars dancing joyfully,
Seashell spirals to gaze at,
Make me feel so small.

Twinkling eyes surround me,
Floating weightlessly,
Dive through floors of fire,
Shooting deadly pungent acid.

Suddenly engine splutters,
Clanking buttons frantically,
Make it through Earth's atmosphere?
The spaceship's slowing down.

Space is laughing heartlessly,
I collapse upon the floor,
Swallowed up and stolen,
Drifting aimlessly to oblivion.

The Best of the Rest

The Alien by Mairéad Merrit (age 10)

The day I met the alien
I was sitting there in school,
I think I was abducted,
And it was really cool!

They dropped me on a planet,
And I was on my own,
At this moment I did feel,
That I would rather be back home.

The aliens name was really weird,
He was called Zing Zong Zong Zing,
He flies around the planets,
In his flying saucer thing.

His skin was green and scaly,
His eyes were small and black
And when he turned around
I saw three lumps upon his back.

When he raised his hand in welcome,
I saw he had three thumbs.
And when he opened his mouth to speak
I saw his purple gums.

We played upon that planet,
And we soared around the moon,
But then there was an explosion,
That came a bit too soon.

"Are you listening at the back there?"
The teacher roared at me,
So I sighed and I shivered,
And came back to reality.

Space Mission by Priya Kaur Sall (aged 9)

I sat in the rocket
going for the moon
missing my family
see you soon

I started crying
I started the rocket
Put on the seat belt
And ripped my pocket

When I reached the moon
I saw aliens
They were the colour of a
Pink balloon

I looked up at the stars
So did the aliens
I looked at the planet Mars
and the other planets too

That was my Space Mission
To go and see the Aliens and the Moon
So I went back home
very soon.

The Moon by Ellen Humby and Chloe Collins (aged 8)

People think the moon is made of cheese,
But I don't think it is.
People think there's such things as aliens,
But I don't think there is.
People think that we can eat the moon
But I don't think we can.
People think we can walk on the moon.
I think we might be able to.
I know that there is no gravity on the moon,
I know that!

Aliens Take Over the World by Ellen Humby and Chloe Collins (aged 8)

Aliens are cool, aliens are weird, and aliens eat anything at all,
Lovely aliens are here to take over the world,
I love aliens as much as they love us,
Even evil aliens love us,
Now our friendship's broken they're here to invade the world
Save us please, the aliens are here.

Living in Space!!!!!! by Alice Mcmullan and Meredith Ruleman (aged 8)

Living in space is not at all fun
It's no way fun
There's no swimming
There are no cars,
It's boring its dumb
There's no football
No swings,
No slides,
I'm telling you - this is not fun.
All you see is stars, stars and stars
STARS
DO YOU GET IT NOW?
IT'S NOT FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Super Man by Katie Milner (aged 9)

I wake out of bed from the moon
I fly to Pluto and back home
I never get a rest!!
The next day I wake out of bed
I fly to Mercury - defeat the aliens
and fly back home AGAIN!
The next day I wake out of bed
I fly all the way to the sun
WAIT a minute
Don't you burn yourself at the sun
Uh oh!!
At last I get a rest

On the Moon by Joseph Harris (aged 9)

I went to my rocket to go to the moon
when I got there much to my surprise
I saw a dancing cow like a leprechaun
Then I saw lots more
I got off the moon to go Mars
to see what there was
I saw chickens in space clucking all night long,
Then I got to Mars
Then I saw pigs going mooo moo cluck cluck
Then it started to dance and sing
I had too much
then I went home to my family
So never go to the moon
and there might not be nightmares.

A Starry Night by Jasmine Barnes (aged 8)

A starry night is very bright,
I do never want it to be light
Looking out the window in my bed,
I'll never forget the stars in my head
The moon is very shiny silver and gold,
I wish I could go outside but it's too cold
People just say that stars are planets
I have a teacher called Mrs Janets
Everyone says that stars are boring
Not any more I'm just ignoring
Stars are great, stars are fun,
It makes me want to eat my bun.

Space is Very Big by Conal Land

Neptune is purple like a plum,
Saturn is yellow like a banana,
Mercury is grey and very dull,
Jupiter is red like a Carr Head uniform,
The Sun is yellow and also glows...

Space Ships Zooming by Sam Rollston

Spaceships zooming,
Planets,
Comets crashing,
Every planet is a God.

Got a Few Lost Pets! by Ellen Marshall (aged 9)

On Mercury is a big fat rabbit
Lost for its owner who fed it too much

On Venus is a lizard
Who ended up in a tortoise hutch

On Mars is a tabby cat
That got stuck outside

On Jupiter is a blackbird
Who nearly got baked in a pie

On Saturn is a Boxer
With a companion, a Pug

On Uranus is a mouse
That got stranded on a boat called Tug

And on Pluto is a fluffy toy bunny
That got left there by an astronaut

The Cosmic Police Department
Hopes they'll find these pets

Except the toy bunny
Who'll be going to the astronaut.

Space and Planets by Vithurshan Canathas (aged 9)

Run up to space,
Join the race.

Wear groovy shoes,
There's an Alien called Mr Hughes.

It was a fun day,
When I ran to The Milky Way.

Go to Mars,
Without a car.

I went to the moon,
Hope to see you soon.

SPACE!
There's no one to race!

ALIENS! by Sara Doublal (aged 9)

The freaky Aliens come out at night.
If you're on the moon they will give you a fright!

They are big and green,
Extremely mean!

They are also hard to be seen.
They live in a place where I have never been.

I believe its tidy, quiet and hopefully clean.
Apparently, they are healthy and lean.

Coz where they come from
All they eat is baked beans!

Alien by Mohammed Khan (aged 8)

I saw an Alien named Bunny,
He was really funny.
He zoomed around in Space,
I thought he was running a race.

He seemed really, really sad,
I believed he was mad.
He was made of silk,
Kept drinking a glass of milk.

He only had one eye,
And kept waving Good Bye!
He was trying to catch a star,
but it was far too far!

When he tried to find the moon,
I thought he would find it soon.
He was looking for a mate,
When he found him he licked his plate!

He was rather fat,
Maybe he had eaten a rat.
First I thought he was cool,
But now he looks like a fool!

Mars Story by Lucy and Keill (aged 10)

Phoebe, Leo and Monica were in the park.
Then it got dark.
They saw a flashing light
And got a big fright.

They saw a rocket big and wide,
So they stepped inside.
Phoebe asked where should we go?
Leo and Monica said I know.

Leo suggested let's go to Mars,
And eat lots of milky bars.
They got into their suits
And put on there shining boots.

They jumped out of the rocket
Monica waved her locket
They had a view of space
Then phoebe fastened her lace

They jumped into the rocket after so much fun.
When they got home they had a run.
They would never forget their trip to Mars
While they stuffed their face with choco bars.

Moon Adventure by Katie Hudson (aged 9)

Brittany, Lindsey and Tom were playing in the park,
Lindsey made a great remark!
"What a holiday!" Lindsey joyfully lied,
While Tom and Brittany were planning to hide,
Tom muttered to the girls, "I'm bored!"
Lindsey and Brittany replied, "Fancy going abroad?"
"Yes why not."
"Fancy going somewhere hot?"
"Majorca!" Tom brightly spoke,
"Yes!" replied the girls, as Brittany began to choke.
Way up on an airplane, joyfully on they're way to Spain.

Lindsey, Brittany and Tom were looking for shells,
Then we heard some ringing bells,
Then we saw an enormous rocket,
Will it fit inside my pocket?
They stepped inside 1 2 3
Then they had a cup of tea.

Tom pushed the button BEEP BEEP BEEP
Then Tom fell asleep
The rocket started shacking just like jelly
Brittany, Tom and Lindsey had a rumble belly!
Blasting off up to the moon,
As Lindsey was listening to a tune.

On the moon floating in the air
Then we saw a chocolate éclair,
Lindsey licking her lips
Scaling her fingertips
May I have a piece Lindsey dribbled?
No - Tom scribbled.

Three aliens hunted us
As the rocket made a slight buzz
Hardly any fuel left so they jumped in the rocket,
And popped the keys inside their pocket,
Set off home,

Wake up Tom you've been dreaming!

Beam Me Up, Scotty
