Catapults and Kingfishers
Teaching Poetry In Primary Schools
by Pie Corbett and Brian Moses
Oxford University Press - Paperback - 112 pages

This is a National Strategy recommended title. And it has to be one of the best books ever written about teaching children to write poetry. It was the first poetry teaching book I ever read and I still find it useful. I would also suggest you check out other publications in amazon for Brian Moses. The Oxford Primary English series - Mrs Noah's Notebook, The Hamster's Diary etc. are also an excellent teaching resource.

No longer in print - but can still be picked up second hand.

How To Be A Brilliant Teacher - and keep your sanity
by Roger Stevens
(First and Best in Education)

"This teacher's guide, for newly qualified teachers or for everyone to read in the staffroom, is a truly inspirational read. The light-hearted self-assessment section covers everything from self image to the power of purpose. It is a practical guide to improving your teaching class and classroom, and deals with rewards, enthusiasm, action plans, helping children learn, creativity and much more. As a photocopiable resource buying one copy enables you to reproduce sections time and time again to hand out to others."

To Rhyme or not to Rhyme - that is the question.

Black's Rhyming and Spelling Dictionary
by Pie Corbett and Ruth Thomson
(A & C Black)

A fantastic school resource. Every primary classroom should have half a dozen. (See the review in Latest Poetry Books) As well as a well laid out rhyming dictionary it contains hints on writing poems and lots of examples.

Poems with Attitude

Poems With Attitude by Andrew Fusek Peters and Polly Peters (Hodder-Wayland)
This is the best (and one of the few) poetry books written for teenagers that I've read. Highly recommended for secondary schools. (RS)
Poems with Attitude is bursting with the raw emotion and hormone-fuelled experimentation of youth and explores the nice and nasty side of adolescence… It is rare and welcome to find a collection that speaks so directly to teenagers.
Mary Byrne, The Guardian
The poems work beautifully as performance poetry and unlike many poetry books for teenagers, they address issues such as bullying, drugs, stereotyping and That First Kiss as well as being very funny. If you thought poetry wasn't for you, because it has nothing to do with your life, try reading this collection!

Don't Put Mustard in the Custard

Don't Put Mustard in the Custard by Michael Rosen
Illustrations by Quentin Blake (Scholastic Children's Books)

If you're not familiar with Michael Rosen's poems (as many of our American friends aren't) then you really must buy this book. Read this and you'll want more! The illustrations are brilliant, too. Other recommended books - the classic Wouldn't You Like To Know and You Wait Till I'm Older Than You all found in amazon under Michael Rosen. (RS)

A big, fat, glossy book of poems

The Hutchinson Treasury of Poetry
Edited by Alison Sage (Hutchinson)

If you're looking for one of those big, glossy, poem-packed anthologies, then I think this superbly illustrated treasury is about the best. Poems range from traditional ballads and old favourites to brand new verse. A wonderful gift. I wish they'd had books like this when I was a boy. (RS)

Contains the amazing Mr Moore

Unzip Your Lips Edited by Paul Cookson
(Macmillan Children's Books)

A brilliant collection of poems to read aloud. It has 144 pages packed with poems from just about every children's poet around. When I visit schools I always take this book with me. (RS)

Front Page Story

Front Page Story by Roger Stevens
Illustrated by Jacqui Thomas (Oxford University Press)

Sam and Lisa are reporters on their class newspaper. But what can they write about? Then ten pounds goes missing and the friends are on the trail of a mystery that really makes the front page. This story is written for nine year olds and above who find reading a bit tricky! This is an excellent series for less confident readers. Check it out. (RS)

Children's Poetry Bookshelf

Children’s Poetry Bookshelf

The Children's Poetry Bookshelf scheme, run by the Poetry Book Society, offers schools a specialist selection of quality children’s poetry books for the 7-11 year old age range by post each year. Poetry experts sift through new books from all the publishers in the UK and Ireland and select works which are particularly suitable for Key Stage 2 level. The Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, is a keen supporter of the scheme, describing it as ‘a wonderful initiative’.

The Best New Children’s Poetry

Three times a year our Selectors choose the best three poetry books published for children aged 7-11; two single-author collections and one anthology. Their choices are based simply on the quality of the poetry. Our first two Selectors are Pie Corbett and Philip Gross. Annual subscribers receive either six or nine poetry books per year (depending on the type of subscription). The cost of subscription means these books are supplied at a discount and sent directly at three points in the year. Books include both paperbacks and hardbacks, with a value of up to £10 per title. Subscriptions cost £30 (for six books) and £42 (for nine books) per year.

Added Value
Subscribers receive support material along with their books; a practical aid to lesson planning. This includes poetry posters, ideas for children’s activities based on poems and the latest news and information from the children’s poetry world.
